C01 - A Stitch in Time - Ages 8+

Students will learn basic sewing skills from threading a needle to sewing seams and hems. A simple pattern will be followed to create a doll-sized dress during the week.

C02 - A Woman's World in 1901 - Ages 10+  CANCELLED FOR 2020

C03 - Addy & Kirsten - Ages 7+ FULL

Students will experience the life of two characters from the American Girl Series- Addy & Kirsten. They will study Addy and her mother, who as slaves, escaped to freedom in the North, and Kirsten, who has come with her family from Sweden to America. Students will bake buttermilk biscuits in a wood burning stove and churn ice cream by hand. They will make yarn dolls, bead necklaces and play game inspired by the 1850’s and 1860’s.

W04 - Amazing Nature 1 - Ages 6-9

Do you love nature and being outside? Do you love to investigate your surroundings, both on a small and large scale? Do you love planting, reusing recycled goods, and building structures that are powered solely by nature? Then come and discover with us! We will dive into the way wind, sunlight and water work together in nature, what humans can do to help leave nature as "natural" as possible and even how we can use nature to better our lives!

W05 - Amazing Nature 2 - Ages 10-13

C07 - Anne of Green Gables - Ages 9+

Based on the Anne of Green Gables story, you will learn about the Victorian Era with special emphasis on fashion and lifestyle. Trips will be taken to various locations, such as the Millinery in Railroad Town. They will hold a Victorian tea party, exchange Valentine candy, create crafts and experience many other adventures based on this much-loved series.

C12 - Bugs & Nature - Ages 6-10

Catch bugs, examine plants and spot creatures in the water! Throughout the week we will be learning about Nebraska vegetation and all the little inhabitants we can find. Get an up-close experience with creatures such as ducks, minnows, butterflies, frogs and more!

C13 - Christmas Past - Ages 8+ CANCELLED FOR 2020

C14 - Cowpokes - Ages 7-8 ALL SESSIONS FULL

Saddle up and learn about the life, dress and work of the cowboy. Cowpokes will learn how to throw a rope, care for a horse, use a branding iron, and more! Students must wear hard-soled shoes or boots or tennis shoes and long jeans to class each day. Students not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to ride that day. Helmets are required for riding- bike helmets work great! If you don’t have one or forget it, we have some on hand at the barn.

W15 - Cyanotype Sun Printing - Ages 10+

Join us as we learn about one of the oldest ways of developing photographs that dates back to 1842! Students will arrange found objects on light-sensitive paper exposed to the sun and rinsed in plain water to create their very own works of art with just a few simple steps.

C16 - Dancing into History - Ages 8-12

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to a ball? Join us as we rediscover the importance of dance and make crafts fit for the occasion. Be prepared to form friendships on the dance floor while we learn historic dances as well as proper posture and ballroom etiquette.

C19 - Digital Photography - Ages 9+

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a great photographer? Come learn the basics of photography, using the many areas of the Stuhr grounds as your subject. Students need to bring a digital camera with an SD card or a cord to connect to a computer.

C20 - Doll A Day - Ages 7+ CANCELLED FOR 2020

C21 - Earth Lodge Adventures - Ages 6-8

Explore the life of a Pawnee child! Each child will make many crafts to be used in fun games and celebrations, and they will leave with a great appreciation for the people who lived on the Nebraska Prairie.

C22 - Explore the Platte - Ages 10+

Come explore the outdoors just as the early explorers, hunters, trappers, and mountain men who traveled along the Platte River would have done. Students will learn how to use a compass, set a simple trap, tan a hide, and much more during this exciting week! Long pants and hard-soled shoes are required for this fun-filled week of adventure. Don’t forget your water bottle!

C23 - Fishing Fundamentals - Ages 8-14

Whether you’re a beginner or have some fishing experience, this class is for you! We’ll learn about species of Nebraska fish and where to catch them- pond, lake or stream- and how the weather has an effect on a good day of fishin’. More experienced fishers will try out different casting techniques and be given the extra challenge of using non-traditional bait in this combined-level class.

W24 - Fish Tales - Ages 8-14

Come join us for this all-day fishing experience where participants can cast their line and kick back and relax for a while. The kids will learn the basics of fishing or simply just enjoy honing their fishing skills. As you can imagine, plenty stories will be told when a group of fishermen get together! While bait for the fish will be provided, participants do need to bring a sack lunch and are welcome to bring any extra bait they’d like to try out.

W25 - For the Birds - Ages 8-12

One of our experienced carpenters will teach participants the basics of building a bird feeder with a hammer and nails. Your feathery friends will thank you for their new feeder when you take it home and fill it up with birdseed!

C26 - Glass Etching - Ages 8-80 ALL SESSIONS FULL

Students young and old will discover the amazing creativity involved in the glass etching process. Throughout the week they will view examples of etching found on mirrors, window panes and even vases and jars. They will develop patterns and learn techniques in design as they create their own works of art. Beginning students will create projects using the sand-blasting technique, and returning students will take their creativity to a new level as they learn about glue-chip glass approximating snowflakes, flash glass, stage blasting, shading and adding photos to a framework of art.

C27 - Gold Rush - Ages 8+

Come learn about the California Trail as it passed through Nebraska and view firsthand where the trail crosses over the museum grounds. We’ll talk about the history of the ’49ers as we stake a claim and pan for gold as if we were in the California gold fields. Those who strike the mother lode will keep their fortune!

C28 - Grandma, Me & Tea - Ages 8+ CANCELLED FOR 2020

C29 - Horse 1 - Ages 8+ (must have completed prerequisite)

This class is designed to give a basic introduction to the horse. You will learn basic ground handling skills, including grooming, saddling and bridling. You will also learn to perform basic maneuvers while mounted. Students must wear hard-soled shoes or boots or tennis shoes and long jeans to class each day. Students not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to ride that day. Helmets are required for riding- bike helmets work great! If you don’t have one or forget it, we have some on hand at the barn. Prerequisite: Must have taken Cowpokes OR Josefina or Kaya in 2018 or later.

C30 - Horse 1 for the Older Rider - Ages 9+ ALL SESSIONS FULL

This class is uniquely designed for older beginning students who have not taken the Cowpokes class and want to learn about horses and how to ride. These students must be at least 9 years old. Students must wear hard-soled shoes or boots or tennis shoes and long jeans to class each day. Students not dressed appropriately will not be allowed to ride that day. Helmets are required for riding- bike helmets work great! If you don’t have one or forget it, we have some on hand at the barn.

C32 - Josefina - Ages 7+ ALL SESSIONS FULL

Come meet the popular American Girl as we read through her stories on our way to New Mexico in the year 1824. We will explore and interact with her rich Mexican culture by cooking foods, playing games, making crafts, and interacting with the animals (horses and goats) that were all part of Josefina’s daily life. This class can be used as a prerequisite to the Horse 1 class.

W36 - Learn to Sew - Ages 6-8 FULL

Your young beginning sewer will tackle a project on pre-punched paper to learn the basics of sewing including a running stitch, backstitch, and how to sew on a button.

W37 - Let's Have a Picnic - Ages 9+ CANCELLED FOR 2020

C38 - Little Women - Ages 9+

Inspired by the treasured books by Louisa May Alcott, you will celebrate just as the March girls did. We’ll enjoy daily “tea time” with piano accompaniment like Beth would have played. Learn to embroider items for Meg’s hope chest. Plus, Jo’s day where we help plan and act out a time period play. And don’t forget Amy’s day painting with easels outside with fancy cakes at tea time.

C39 - Log Cabin Adventures - Ages 7-9 FULL

Step back in time to live like the first settlers of the Nebraska Prairie. Students will create crafts, build miniature log cabins and plant crops while experiencing life in a log cabin. They will have several challenges during the week such as hauling buckets of water using a yoke and playing games that pioneer children would have played!

W40 - Masters of Art 1 - Ages 6-8 FULL

Your young artist will learn about a few of the great artists in history while creating a masterpiece each day. Some pieces will focus on skill and others will be an exercise in enjoying the process. As we all know, art can be messy sometimes, so please send children dressed in appropriate clothes!

W41 - Masters of Art 2 - Ages 9-12

W42 - Mind Your Manners - Ages 11-14

Participants in this workshop will prepare a tea and practice their manners, from bowing and curtsying to sitting up straight and the art of making small talk. The etiquette learned in this workshop has been used throughout history and some of it is still relevant today!

C43 - Mixing Bowls & Wooden Spoons - Ages 10-adult CANCELLED FOR 2020

W44 - Pawnee Pinch Pot 1 - Ages 6-8 ALL SESSIONS FULL

In this workshop, students will make a piece of Pawnee pottery and learn how they were used by the Native Americans in Nebraska 2000 years ago.  They will take the pot home with them the day of class.

W45 - Pawnee Pinch Pot 2 - Ages 9-12

C46 - Pieces of Time - Ages 9+ CANCELLED FOR 2020

W47 - Pigments of Your Imagination - Ages 10-adult

Come learn some fun techniques for dyeing clothing and other fabrics. Each participant will walk away with a pair of ice-dyed socks, a Shibori-dyed shirt, and a tote bag using a ‘reverse’-dyeing method. Each participant’s shirt size and shoe size (youth or adult) will be requested at registration. Come dressed in old clothes in case the dye splatters!

W48 - Pioneer Olympic Games - Ages 9-12

Come join us for an afternoon of friendly competition as participants compete in a series of pioneer games. Contests will include a stilt walk, hoop rolling, horse shoe toss, water pumping, and battledore and shuttlecock, or the game that has become known badminton. Tennis shoes and comfortable clothing are suggested.

W50 - Pressed Flower Bookmark 1 - Ages 6-8

Pressed flowers can be used for a variety of projects and in this workshop, participants will get to create 2-3 bookmarks to take home to mark their place as they read their favorite books!

C52 – Samantha - Ages 7+ FULL

Come meet the beloved American Girl Samantha as we read about her adventures and imagine what it would be like to live in New York in the year 1904! We will learn about and interact with artifacts from her time period while learning about American culture at that time. We will recreate many of Samantha's adventures through crafts, parties, games, and cooking that were part of Samantha's world.

C53 - School House Science 1 - Ages 6-8 ALL SESSIONS FULL

Do you love to discover? To dive in and feed your curiosity? Do you love to figure out how rockets propel, crystals form and how bones and joints work? Then Schoolhouse Science is the perfect adventure for you! Get your hands dirty as we turn eggs into bouncy balls, make volcanoes explode, and try our hand at growing our own crystals. Discover the WHY in all of the fun!

C54 - School House Science 2 - Ages 9-11

Although this class will cover many of the same topics as the first class, these experiments are designed for scientists that are just a little older. Come join us for a week of fun and fascinating science!

C55 - Secret Fairy Garden - Ages 7-9

What lies hidden in Stuhr’s beautiful gardens? Could Stuhr be the secret home for “Flower Fairies”? Our Fairy Godmother will lead students to a secret enchanted garden, where they will learn the language of flowers and trees and the folklore of Garden Fairies. This will be a week of crafts and activities leading up to Friday’s tea.

W56 - Sewing for Preschoolers - Ages 4-5 CANCELLED FOR 2020

W57 - Solar Energy 1 - Ages 7-9 ALL SESSIONS FULL

Discover how harvesting energy from the sun can provide us energy to grow, work and play. Watch a solar car in action and try harvesting the sun’s energy to melt s’mores in your own solar oven! Students will also have the chance to visit with members of the American Solar Challenge teams and see the solar cars as they make a stop at Stuhr Museum. *The 2020 American Solar Challenge has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we will still hold this workshop and learn about solar energy!

W58 - Solar Energy 2 - Ages 10+

Do you love building things? Have you ever wondered about how to make electricity from the SUN? Come learn about solar energy and build a solar phone charger! Students will also have the chance to visit with members of the American Solar Challenge teams and see the solar cars as they make a stop at Stuhr Museum. *The 2020 American Solar Challenge has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we will still hold this workshop and learn about solar energy!

W59 - Sound & Music 1 - Ages 6-9

Stop and listen to the sounds around you. What do you hear? The clicking of computer keys? The whistling of the wind? Running water from a faucet? Humans have been creating instruments since the beginning of time that mimic the sounds found in everyday life, and have used these sounds to create the music we all enjoy! Join us as we discover how different sounds are created, build our own instruments, identify the songs we use at special celebrations (Happy Birthday to You!) and try playing them on our creations. We’ll take it one step further when we learn about the different classical instruments (harp, drums, violin, trumpet, etc.), how they work together to create beautiful symphonies, and even get a look at the use of CODING in written music. It’s sure to be a melody-filled time!

C63 - Trails West - Ages 9+

Join us as we hit the trail and head west! Students will explore the life of a child on the trail in the 1850’s while learning about various aspects of westward expansion. Topics will include the many different trails and stage lines traveled, as well as what would be brought along or left behind. No sandals are allowed on the trail; closed-toe hard-soled shoes or tennis shoes are mandatory.

C64 - Watercolor Painting - Ages 9+

Learn the basics about watercolor technique and sketching as you create images taken from Stuhr’s rich environment. Explore the elements and principals of design, composition and color relationship and how to appreciate and critique your own work. This class will meet in the air-conditioned Collections building again this year with some unique items to use as painting inspiration!
