2008 Volunteer Luncheon

GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - Stuhr Museum's annual Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony was held on Friday afternoon, April 18, with Railroad Town's own Silver Cornet Band the recipients of the "Volunteers of the Year" award.
The event, held in the Stuhr Building, featured a verbal and culinary "thank you" to Stuhr's valuable volunteers, and a chance for those volunteers to break bread together at the museum. Joe Black, Stuhr Museum's Executive Director, gave a speech detailing just how valuable volunteers are to Stuhr's efforts. The statistics he cited include:
- 467 volunteers logged 28,915 hours at an hourly value of $19.51 set by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That comes out to a contribution of $564,131.56 by our valued volunteers.
- Our average volunteer gave 61.9 hours of service per year to the museum.
- Stuhr has enjoyed a massive upsurge in volunteer commitment, coming from community organizations such as The Principal Financial Group, a number of local church and the TeamMates organization, just to name a few.
- Stuhr received more than 9,000 more volunteer hours this year than in the previous year.
Railroad Town's Silver Cornet Band, which has played events at Stuhr Museum for years, was given the "Volunteers of the Year" award and the group's conductor Judi Nelson was given a new baton in honor of her work with the group. Nelson not only picks music and runs practices for the group, but organizes a marching band for Harvest of Harmony each year.
You can catch the Silver Cornet Band, and many of Stuhr Museum's fantastic volunteers this summer season, which begins May 1. For information on volunteering at Stuhr Museum, call (308) 385-5316.
