Tinsmith Shop

Tinsmithing as a trade was not as prevalent nor as organized as other trades, such as blacksmithing. In the late 19th-century tinsmith customers' projects were varied. They could include roofing, cornices for business facades, tin gutters for homes and businesses, and pipe for cooking and heating stoves. Smaller jobs included reapiring household utensils and other metal items.
The Platte Valley Tinshop is housed in the Eggers barn, once located at the home originally owned by Claus Eggers, 521 East 2nd St. in Grand Island. Donated to Stuhr Museum by John Briseno, the building contains the equipment of C. W. Barber's tin shop from North Loup, Nebraska. E-mail the Tinsmith at tinsmith@stuhrmuseum.org.
