General Mercantile Emporium

The general store, which last year did a booming business, stocks a wide variety of supplies for home and farm.
Erected in 1874 this old harness shop from O'Neill, Holt County, Nebr., last operated as a shoe repair shop by Timothy M. Harrington. This building came to the museum in 1967. A general store was almost certainly to be among the first buildings erected in the town. Every corner of the building was put to good use, you can be sure of that. It was a general practice for proprietors to accept country produce in payment for their goods. The goods and little money the farmers received from the merchants allowed them to survive the hard times. Stores remained open on Saturday nights as long as customers were on the streets.
