Dr. Deffenbaugh's Office

Through the support of a son, the late George S. Deffenbaugh, Railroad Town's doctor's office was created as a tribute to his parents. George was born March 30, 1907 when the family lived at Norman.The Deffenbaugh Doctor's office in Railroad Town is located in one of two cottages that were moved to the museum from 310 and 312 E. 2nd St., built in the early 1890s. They were donated to Stuhr Museum in 1967 by the Walter Quillin family.
Dr. Martin and his wife, Dr. Nelle G. Deffenbaugh, practiced in several Central Nebraska communities, including Grand Island in the 1907-1913 period. Martin was the son of Sylvester and Virginia Deffenbaugh, who settled in the new Hall County railroad town of Cairo back in 1889. Sylvester once served as Cairo's postmaster. Dr. Nelle, who had three brothers who became physicians, was the daughter of George and Hannah Carr, 1878 settlers in neighboring Buffalo County. Both Martin and Nelle eventually moved their practices to Detroit, Michigan. Through the support of a son, the late George S. Telephone Exchange

The exchange is located in one of two cottages that were moved to the museum from 310 and 312 E. 2nd St., built in the early 1890's. They were donated to Stuhr Museum in 1967 by the Walter Quillin family. The Nebraska Telephone Company became part of today's US West Communications.
