Traveler’s Home Boarding House
The building known as the Traveler's Home on Front Street in Railroad Town was once a house located in Red Cloud, Webster County, Nebr. The earliest Sanborn map for Red Cloud shows a single story structure on lot 3. On lot 4 a second single story building is listed as a laundry.
The next available Sanborn map is dated 1892. On lot 3 there is now a 2 story structure of frame
construction with a composition roof and an open frame porch across the front and side (left hand as facing building) of the building. At the back of the building there is a single story room with a shingle roof. The building sits on the edge of the street. The laundry is gone from lot 4.
The 1897 Sanborn Shows the same structure as in 1892 with an addition to the single story part on the back of the building. It is also listed as vacant.
In 1912 the structure has now been moved back away from the street to the center of lots 3 & 4. The back
addition has been removed. On the 1922 Sanborn map the rear addition returns but on the opposite side of the rear of the building. The 1944 Sanborn map is the same.
For many years the building has been confused with a structure that was once known as the 4th Avenue Hotel in Red Cloud. The Sanborn maps clearly show that the house now located in Railroad Town once sat next to the 4th Avenue Hotel. The 4th Avenue Hotel was torn down in 1921.
At the Traveler's Home Boarding House commercial men are always welcome. A sample room is provided for their use. Board, is by the day or week at reasonable rates. The Traveler's Home is noted for changing their sheets once a week, rather than just turning them over as their competition does. The G.A.R. Restaurant in the Traveler's Home Hotel is famous for its fine table.
