With processions, speeches, military tributes and more, Stuhr Museum's 1890's Memorial Day Celebration is everything you want from a holiday outing. This year's event runs from 10 am - 5 pm Monday, May 28th in Stuhr's 1890's Railroad Town.
This stirring event begins at 10 a.m. when Railroad Town opens with the townspeople finding themselves in a reflective mood. They gather at the Railroad Town bandstand at roughly 11:00 for a flag-led, quarter-mile procession to the rural cemetery adjacent to the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church on the museum’s grounds. A short remembrance ceremony and military tribute with a firearm salute will take place.
After lunch the festivities continue at the bandstand with music provided by Railroad Town’s own Silver Cornet Band, playing patriotic favorites from the period. From there, visitors can watch a historic remembrance ceremony, taken from past Grand Army of the Republic literature, which honors the serving military and those who died in service.
All day, the residents of Railroad Town will be staffing the historic homes and businesses of Railroad Town. Visitors are also invited to visit the Farm Machinery Building, featuring hundreds of pieces from small plows all the way up through steam engine and the Stuhr Building which will be hosting the "Willa Cather: The Voice of the Frontier" exhibit which features artifacts and photos of one of Nebraska's most beloved authors.
Admission to this memorable day is $10 for adults and $8 for children. Stuhr and Hastings Museum members are admitted free of charge. For more information, contact the museum at (308) 385-5316.
