| During the earliest years
of Hall County, Nebraska, officials recorded marriages in various record
books. In the preceeding 130 + years, these records have been scattered.
In November 1871, Hall County began to record marriages using the standardized
form of large ledgers familiar to local researchers. The Hall County
Clerk's Office in Grand Island, NE holds all such post 1871 marriage records
ledgers.
However, the 34 marriages
recorded in Hall County between 1860-1870 can be found in two separate
volumes of official county records. The Hall County Clerk's Office
maintains one volume with the earliest minutes of the Hall
County Board of Supervisors and records for eight of the earliest Hall
County marriages.
The Nebraska
State Historical Society holds the second volume in which the largest
number of early Hall County marriages are recorded. This volume
of court records contains 31 marriages dating from 1860-1870.
The Nebraska State Historical Society inventoried this volume as: "probate
and justice docket #A-1" in series two, Hall County probate records of
RG260.
There is some duplication
between the two volumes, but the yearly marriage totals are as follows:

From probate judges to justices of the
peace, several different county officals recorded entries into these volumes.
Therefore, handwriting varies and names are not consistently spelled.
Some entries have faded to be nearly invisible, while others have bled
through the page. Also, marriages are entered as recorded -- not
as performed. Years skip around as local justices of the peace offically
recorded past marriages. An unusual record found within these volumes is
an 1870 marriage from Wyoming Territory in what is now Sweetwater County,
WY -- some 500 miles west of Hall County.
