| Emma
Goodman Civil War Letters, 1863-1865

From 1863 to 1865,
Emma Goodman received letters from Edward Pierson, a bugler with Battery
C of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery in the Union Army. In the the
letters that survive, Pierson writes about everything from the "dull monotony"
of camp life to the death of President Lincoln. The Pierson letters are
a lesson in geography and testify to the mail service during the Civil
War. Written in five different states over a two-year period, the
letters recount "Sherman's March to the Sea." |
