September 2000:
Hall County School District #3
Grand Island vicinity, Nebraska, ca. 1910

Hall County School District #3, ca. 1910

This photograph from the Schoel Family Collection came to the Research Department unidentified.  With a little investigation, we found that Hulda (Schoel) Marth's obituary reported that  Hulda graduated from Hall County School District #3.  By comparing the children in this photo with an identified photo of the Schoel children, we able to identified Hulda and Elsie Schoel.  They are both standing in the back row wearing matching plaid dress.  Elsie is 2nd from left and Hulda 6th from the left.  It is unclear which young boy is Harry.

The monthly report for for Hall County School District #3 from Sept. 29, 1911 lists Frederick Schoel's children Hulda, Elsie and Harry in attendance.  In the photograph 21 children and one woman are pictured.  The month report lists 21 students attending District #3.  According to the report, E. H. Bockhahn was the teacher for District #3 (likely the women in the dark dress 4th from left in the back row).   This is our only photograph of Hall County School District #3

Bienenzucht und Honiggewinnung Nach der Neuesten Methode
Book by J. F. Eggers
Anzeiger and Herold, Grand Island, Nebraska, 1898

German Bee-Keeping book by J. F. EggersA new title in our archives is this locally printed book.  Written in German, the title translates as Beekeeping and Honey Making by the Newest Method.  The author, J. F. Eggers, was from Grand Island, Nebraska.  This book is the Research Department's first book by Mr. Eggers.

At the time this book was published, Hall County produced large amounts of honey.  The federal census of 1900 recorded a production of nearly 5 tons of honey for Hall County.  Unfortunately, the census does not individually name the farmers who kept the profitable bees.  While we failed to rank even among the top 20 Nebraska counties for honey production, Hall County did attract considerable attention with its honey display at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
