Can you help me with my genealogical research?

Remember, the Stuhr Museum's Research Department concentrates on gathering information and artifacts relating to Hall County.  If your research involves another county, you are directed to the historical agencies in that location.

Do you have birth, death, and marriage records?

Original vital statistics are not held by the Research Department.  However, our holdings do include index cards for marriages up to 1914.  Marriage records for Hall County are held by the County Clerk's office.  The Nebraska State Historical Society has the county's marriage records on microfilm.  For birth and death records researchers are directed to a state office:

Vital Records
P. O. Box 95007
Lincoln, NE 68509-5007

How do I research an old building?

The Research Department does not hold research files on most older buildings in Hall County.  In most cases little or no research has been done on a given location.  If you have a question regarding the National Register status of a structure, or wish to nominate a structure for the National Register, contact:

 Historic Preservation Office
 Nebraska State Historical Society
 P. O. Box 82554
 Lincoln, NE 68501-2554

How do I care for my antiques?

Only general tips for care of older paper items can be offered by Research Department staff.  For detailed advice it is suggested that a party contact a paper conservator.  A paper conservator is on the expert staff of the Nebraska State Historical Society at:

Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center

 Can you appraise my antiques?

The museum staff cannot appraise artifacts of any kind.  The Research Department is unable to provide appraisals of monetary value of materials offered as gifts, brought in for identification, or submitted for any other purpose.  The Internal Revenue Service regards libraries and museums as interested parties, and appraisals prepared by them for gifts that they receive are subject to question.  Donors or other parties desiring appraisals must themselves acquire and pay a qualified appraiser.
