Stuhr Quilt Show and News

GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - The Stuhr Museum Quilt Show brought vendors and textile arts enthusiasts from around the state to Grand Island on Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3 to see a dazzling array of quilts, take classes and expand their knowledge of this growing and vibrant art form.

The show featured exhibits from Stuhr's own collection ranging from conventional to abstract, and dozens of vendors who provided plenty of material for enthusiasts, while creating a lot of color inside the Stuhr Building. The winners of the 2008 "It's Quilting Time" Quilt Contest were also announced and include:

Large Category
"My Warm Cabin Nights" by Wanda Mowry of Gering, Nebraska
"Palette of Color" by Jan Rockford of Nebraska
"Fields of Blue, Mountains of Orange" by Amanda Benz of Kearney, Nebraska

In addition to the success of the Quilt Show, on Monday several quilts from Stuhr Museum's collection returned from a long engagement at the Smithsonian Institute, where they were part of a traveling show that depicted quilts used along the Platte River Road. The pieces, which include some quilts over 150 years old which have traveled more than half the world before they made it to Nebraska, will be part of the quilt exhibit next year.
