The Famous & Infamous of Hall County
May 11 – September 23 in the Stuhr Building
GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM – Hall County history is full of stories detailing heroism of the highest order, and villainy spoken only in hushed tones. During Stuhr Museum’s summer exhibit which is now showing, it’s time to learn the truth.
“The Famous and Infamous of Hall County,” begins May 11 and tells stories the stories of local people who have made an impact on the world as well as those stories you may only have heard through the grapevine. Through liberal use of artifacts and photos from the museum’s collections, visitors will hear the true stories of villainy and valor in our county’s past, and shed light on where some untrue stories may have come from.
The exhibit is the centerpiece of a summer dedicated to the “Famous and Infamous” concept which includes special events such as “Ghosts, Crimes and Urban Legends” on June 16 and July 21 and “Casino Night in Railroad Town” on September 8.
“The Famous and Infamous of Hall County” ranges from our famous citizens like the Abbott family, Henry Fonda, Grant Reynard to the infamous brothels of Grand Islandand the Doniphan legend of the haunted nine bridges. There are some instances where you might have to decide for yourself if the information is famous or infamous. Either way, Stuhr Museum’s curators intended for this exhibit to spark many memories and much conversation.
The exhibit also contains a section which includes more detailed and graphic stories, photos and artifacts covering topics such as drug use, funeral practices and murders. The section, labeled “The Underbelly of Hall County” is educational and fascinating, but might not be appropriate for younger audiences.
This is an exhibit you will be talking about all summer. The exhibit is in the Stuhr Building during business hours, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and Noon – 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children with the exception of special event pricing. Members are free. For more information, call the museum at (308) 385-5316.
