2011 Summer School at Stuhr Museum

Each summer, the Stuhr Museum Education Department offers classes for students of all ages, from preschoolers through adults. Class size is limited and registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration for Stuhr Museum members runs from March 1 - March 26. Registrations will then be open to the general public on March 27th.

A Doll A Day
Ages:  7 Years and up

Description: Since time began one of the most common toys has been dolls. Students will create many dolls while learning some history of each one. Dolls will be made from corn cobs, corn husks, handkerchiefs, yarn, paper and rags. By weeks end there will be a handful of tiny new dolls to take home and love.

A Mystery in History (4 days)

Description: When the Railroad Town Post Office was being remodeled, a mysterious package, that had been lost for years, was found behind a cabinet. Follow the clues of the package to find its rightful owner. Stuhr research departments will be used for investigators to solve "The Secrets of the Lost Parcel."

Addy & Kirsten
Ages: 7 years old and up

Description: Students will experience the life of two characters from the American Girl Series. They will study Kirsten, who has come with her family from Sweden to America. They will also explore the lives of Addy and her mother, who as slaves escaped to freedom in the North. Students will bake buttermilk biscuits in a wood burning stove, and churn ice cream by hand. They will make yarn dolls, bead necklaces, dip candles and play games inspired by the 1850s and 1860s.

Age Old Handmade Science
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: Students will discover the 'science' in nature using very simple items. Learn the age of a tree and measure its height with a shadow. Create a personal compass, a pocket sundial and participate in an archaeological dig.

All Aboard!
Ages: 6 years old and up

Description: Train travel comes to life as students explore the steam locomotive, the coal car, the dining car, the caboose and the depot. Students will become little engineers, brakemen and conductors as they learn about trains through games, books and activities. Come join the other passengers in the Bosselman Family, Hoch Family, Union Pacific Boarding Car.

All About Animals
Ages: 10 years old and up

Description: Animals have always played important roles in our lives, from helping us farm and hunt to being our transportation, faithful companions and entertainment. Each day, students will learn about a different aspect of animals through hands-on activities and stories. One day, we'll even pretend to be veterinarians as we learn some basics about animal health care. If you love animals and want to learn more, this is the class for you!

Anne of Green Gables
Ages: 9 years old and up

Description: Students will learn about the Victorian Era as they enjoy this class based on the Anne of Green Gables story. Special emphasis will be placed on fashion and lifestyle. Trips will be taken to various locations, such as the Millinery in Railroad Town. They will hold a Victorian tea party, exchange valentine candy, create crafts and experience many other adventures based on this much loved series.

Arbor Art
Ages: 8 years old and up

Description: Discover the beauty of Stuhr's Hornady Family Arbor as art projects are created from materials such as trees, flowers, grasses and more. Learn to create keepsakes from the wealth of nature's richness that can be found throughout Stuhr's grounds. Students should bring an oversized shirt for clothing protection.

Art of Pie Baking (3 hours)

If you love pie, then this class is for you! Students will make a variety of pics from the All American Apple, to pumpkin. At least 10 different pies will be made using single, double and lattice crusts. This will be a week of taste bud tempting, palate pleasing, pie baking. Adults are welcomed too!

Barnyard Preschool

Description: Discover how much fun
helping with farm chores can actually be! Pump water from the well and scrub clothes and hang them to dry outside. Meet the chickens and gather eggs, then use the egg shells to create artwork. Plant seeds and tend the garden. Explore the barn and have an old fashioned hoe-down in the loft. Learn that from dawn to dusk there is always something to do down on the farm.

This class is uniquely designed as a combination of Cowpokes and Horse 1, for older students who want to learn about horses and how to ride. These students must be at least 9 years old. Blacksmithing

Description:
Students will learn basic blacksmithing skills, shop safety, how to build and maintain a coal fire, as well as hammer control and techniques. There will be a different project each day. Due to the nature of this class, long sleeve shirts, jeans and boots are required. For safety purposes students must stand 4'6'' tall. Children wearing shorts or nylon pants will not be allowed to participate. Leather gloves are recommended and safety glasses will be provided.

Description:
Discover many of the artistic and creative ways that candles can be made. Hand-dipped, multi layer, cracked ice, sand candles and more will be created. Students will discover the fun they can have as they make and keep a variety of candles during the week. Older clothes should be worn as wax can be difficult to remove from fabrics.

Description: Dig a little deeper with this hands-on nature exploration class. Each day will introduce a new theme; we will take a look at how Native Americans used plants, we will have some fun with animals and we will conduct experiments that even a "mad scientist" would love. Students will meet in Stuhr's own Earth Lodge where they will explore the life of a Pawnee child. A hard day's work will include actual gardening with bone tools, as well as, preparing for the big buffalo hunt. Each child will make many crafts to be used in fun games and celebrations, and they will get a great appreciation for the people who lived off the Nebraska Prairie.

Description:
From wool to finished project, this class will have it all! Students will learn to sun-dye wool with Kool Aid to make beautiful Ojo de Dios (the God's Eye) window ornaments. They will learn basic spinning skills on a stick and an introduction to wet felting techniques. An exploration of how prairie plant fibers were used to make baskets and ropes will complete the week.

Fishing! A life long hobby! Basic fishing skills will be taught from equipment to bait. Learn species of Nebraska fish and where to catch them, whether it is a pond, lake or stream and even learn how the weather has an effect on a good day of fishin'. Description:
Students young and old will discover the amazing creativity involved in the glass etching process. Throughout the week they will view examples of etching found on mirrors, window panes and even vases and jars. They will develop patterns and learn techniques in design as they create their own personal works of art. Sand blasting technique will be demonstrated. A couple of projects will be made and a framed mirrored design will be completed and taken home.

Gold Rush Trail

Students will study the California Trail as it passed through Nebraska and view firsthand Stuhr Museum's location in this reference. They will study the history of the Goldrush '49ers. They will even find, stake a claim and pan for gold as if they were in the very fields. Those who strike the mother lode will keep their fortune.

Grandma, Me and Tea

For those who love all things Victorian, you will know what an important event it is to host a tea party! The week will be spent preparing for the tea party to be held on Friday when the students will entertain one of their favorite persons in grand style. Imagine being a child whose parents have made the decision to move west. Students will experience first-hand the life of early pioneers, when they pull handcarts around Stuhr's grounds. At 'camp' they will cook in dutch ovens over an open fire, read journal entries, and study the wagon trains, Overland Stage Lines and even the Pony Express! Hard-soled shoes or tennis shoes are mandatory.

Students will enjoy the time honored fun of jam and jelly making as they tour Stuhr's gardens, harvest fruit, design their own labels and hand make their products. By the end of the week they will have prepared several personal jars to take home, refrigerate and allow their families to enjoy.

Delve into Native American cultures with this class based on Kaya from the American Girl Series. Students will explore Kaya's native Nez Perce traditions as they compare her lifestyle to our own local Pawnee history. Students will learn about tribal life as they create crafts and play games inspired by Kaya and her friends and family.

Kool Aid Scarf

Description:
Scarves have been used for warmth and as fashion statements for hundreds of years. Students in this class will learn how to make a scarf that requires no sewing, yet has fun, function and style all in one! After learning how the color-wheel can enhance their final creation, students will use needle felting and wet felting techniques to complete their project. Beads will accent the scarf to bring a modern whimsy to a traditional item.

As Laura grows, so do her experiences on the prairie. Students will explore pioneer life through the eyes of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Crafts and activities will focus on the books "On the Banks of the Plum Creek" and "Little Town on the Prairie." Projects will be sewn and foods will be made, which Laura (and even Mary) would be proud of. Pioneer clothing is encouraged, but not required.

Leather Working

Explore the lives of 4 unique sisters through the writing of Louisa May Alcott. Your "little woman" will fall in love with this popular novel while re-creating life with Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy during the 1880's. Cooking, play acting and civil service duties are only a few activities included in this week long adventure.

Become a part of this unique, new experience that involves you in many aspects of the education and interpretive programs at the museum. Participants will spend 4 in-depth days living and working in four different time periods: The 1890's Pawnee Earth Lodge, the 1860's Road Ranche, the 1890's Railroad Town and the Turn-Of-The-Century Farm. Activities will include period-appropriate chores, crafts and meal preparation. Participants will be able to use learned skills throughout the season to assist in the Interpretation and Education programs at Stuhr Museum. Limited to 12 participants.

Log Cabin Adventures

Students will step back in time to live like the first settlers of the Nebraska Prairie. They will make covered wagons, miniature log cabins and plant crops while they explore life in a log cabin settlement. They will have the hard experience of pulling a Mormon hand-cart across the prairie and hauling buckets of water using a yoke. They will also have a fun experience playing games and preparing for Nebraska to become a state!

Martha Stewart: 1890's Style

Description: Even pioneer women cared about entertaining and style in their homes. Students will discuss fashion, trends, and etiquette as they learn about traditional life for a young lady in the 1890's. Experience a variety of home-making tasks; churn butter, bake on the wood burning stove, sew and wash clothes and discover why they say "a woman's work is never done."

Millinery Magic

Description:
Students will be given a rare opportunity to discover the life of an apprentice Milliner as they create their own Victorian hat. The week will begin with the making of a personal stitch book, proceed to the drawing and design phase and end with the creation of a personal Victorian hat. Students will visit the Mercantile to see what other accessories the "proper" Victorian young lady might have in her possession and the class will end with an informal style show on Friday.

Description:
Students will experience the wonderful aromas and tantalizing flavors of fresh baked bread, cream puffs with homemade filling, dumplings simmering in broth and even a cake using great-grandma's recipe. These and other flour based recipes derived from batters and dough will be prepared and cooked on an actual wood burning stove. Students are encouraged to bring their apron and come join in the fun.

Music on the Prairie

This class is designed to allow little first time visitors of Stuhr Museum the opportunity to explore all the amazing places in Railroad Town to have fun. Students will study the history of Native American beading and it's importance as self-expression. They will discover this beautiful art by designing their own patterns that will then be created on the beading loom. Students will also learn the lazy stitch which can be beaded directly on leather or other fabrics. This class fittingly will take place in the Gus Fonner Memorial Rotunda.

Nebraska's Outlaws

Description:
Students will distinguish between myth and reality as they learn about "outlaws" who have been made larger than life. Legends such as Jessie James and the Daltons and their adventures here in Nebraska will be studied. The week will be spent planning and staging mischief throughout the museum grounds. Will justice prevail? Perhaps the students will have an inside study of the Marshal's jail! This experience is not for the faint hearted.

Prairie Crafting and Games

Description:
Spend a week exploring how Nebraska children filled their play time. Students will discover old fashion fun as they learn to play checkers, marbles, pick-up sticks, jump rope and many more time honored games. String games, buzz saws and puppets will be made as simple household items are used to create joy. Books will be read, crafts will be created, memories will be made and no batteries will be necessary.

Prairie Felting with Samson

Description: What in the world does our buffalo, Samson, know about felting? Students will use buffalo fur and sheep's wool to create a unique prairie collage, perfect for framing. They will learn different techniques of needle felting to create grass, flowers, clouds and, of course, a buffalo! A brief history of felt uses will be discussed as well as a look at the importance of the buffalo for Native American Cultures.

Students will explore new frontiers in an old-fashioned way. They will experience a connection to history through daily activities, such as exploring Railroad Town and the barnyard. Children will be able to imagine life as a pioneer through reading stories and enjoying firsthand the lifestyle of the prairie by participating in old-fashioned games and making handcrafts. Stuhr's unique setting will stimulate the adventurous spirit with a fun approach to learning

Description: Not only will we make puppets, but we will entertain with them too! Children will create a variety of puppets using anything from sacks to socks. We will then use them, along with our imaginations, to perform for each other some of the best "Off Broadway" shows around!

Railroad Comes to the Prairie

The students will discover the history of the building of the railroad through Nebraska and see its impact on our state's development. Manual communication techniques will be experienced as various train cars and the depot will be explored. They will learn to switch genuine tracks and experience communication first hand as a telegraph system is built and Stuhr's own system is experienced. They will discover old fashioned fun as they assemble an electric train set and then take an abundance of railroad handcart rides.

Description:
This class is based on the American Girl Book Series. Samantha is an orphan being raised by her wealthy Grandmother in the early 1900s. Students will experience proper etiquette as they prepare and serve foods from the Victorian era including hand-churned ice cream, sugar cookies and strawberry biscuits. They will create a number of Victorian crafts, such as trinket boxes, hair bows, cross-stitch and calling cards, as they share Samantha's story. Period dress is encouraged but not required.

What lies hidden in Stuhr's beautiful gardens? Could Stuhr be the secret home for "Flower Fairies?" This will be a week of crafts and activities that will lead to Friday's tea.

Description: Why do we even have museums? Discover all the "back doors" that keep the museum running and what the responsibilities of people are to preserve our past. We will look at artifacts never before seen by the public and learn not only its use, but maybe even hear the story that comes with it. We will adventure through Railroad Town with new eyes at all the detail used to represent a time in history.

Tinsmithing

Students will learn about the origin, tools and products of the forgotten trade of Tinsmithing. By using the tools of the trade, students will create several authentic items that might have been found for sale in a tinsmith's wagon. Students get to take home the items they make.

Students who love to perform will be given the opportunity to study under the direction of one of Grand Island's dramatic artists. The week will be spend experiencing poetry, prose, comedic vignette and other dramatic pieces from the 1890s. Nebraska authors such as Willa Cather will be experienced. Students will perform for family, friends and Stuhr members as Stuhr's own "Vaudeville on the Prairie" is performed at the Railroad Town Depot ON FRIDAY. The public is welcomed.

Description:
Students will study art appreciation and history as they participate in this class. They will review watercolor technique and sketching as they create images taken from Stuhr's rich environment. They will learn elements and principal of design, composition and color relationship and will be encouraged with technique as to how to critique their own work.

Description:
Being a farm kid in 1890 means hard work and long hours to help ma and pa with all that needs to be done! Students will experience "barn chores" as they help to feed and water our goats and sheep, and they may even be asked to help muck the stalls. Young farmer's skills will be tested in the garden as they prepare soil, plant, and carry water by bucket brigade. A highpoint in the class is sheep shearing, where the students will see firsthand how wool is prepared. Put on our overalls and grab your pitchfork, because we've got chores to do.

Description:
Not quite old enough for the big kid's classes, but ready for some hands-on creative fun? This class is designed just for younger students who want an introduction to woodworking. Students will create simple projects without the need for large power tools; they will saw, sand and hammer to complete a toy train and a toy boat, perfect for bringing home to play with for years! Provided goggles must be worn and open toed shoes will not be allowed.

Description:
Students will learn basic use of vintage hand tools such as the hammer, hand saw, rasp, hand plane, brace and auger bit. Rich examples of period woodwork will be viewed. As time allows the daily projects will include a tri-square, a letter holder, a wooden jack puzzle, a climbing bear and a peg puzzle. There will be strong emphasis on safety. Provided goggles must be worn and open toed shoes will not be allowed.
