GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM — A great weekend full of arts and crafts, games, history and fun await during Stuhr Museum’s annual “Back to School in Railroad Town” event August 30, 31 and September 1.
During this perennial event, students test their skills at Peter's School with day classes, hands-on activities, and maybe a few games, if the teacher says it's OK. Young students can tour the 1890s school and the surrounding area, create craft projects at the Peters Schoolhouse, go to "recess" with games such as hoops and sticks, stilt walking and others, and enjoy other aspects of life in the 1890s educational system. Certificates of merit will be given to students who create a project or take placement tests in reading, spelling geography, math, science or writing.
Adults can also take quite a bit from this fun weekend dedicated to education, by visiting Railroad Town, getting a taste of 1890s life and experiencing first hand how relationships between children and school differed in Hall County's past.
If nothing else, this event brings you back to a simpler time when school didn't start until after the month of August.
Regular admission fees apply, which are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $6 for children age 12 and under. Children under 5 years of age and Stuhr Museum members are admitted free. For more information, call (308) 385-5316 ext. 201 or log onto www.stuhrmuseum.org.
