Moonshell Gives Stuhr the "Literary Award" for Leschinsky Book

GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSUM — Stuhr Museum was given the “Literary Award” by the Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council for the book “Grand Island: The Julius Leschinsky Photographs” on Wednesday. The award is part of Moonshell’s annual Art Awards which honor local events, performances, artists, authors, educators and projects.

“ Grand Island: The Julius Leschinsky Photographs” explores the pictorial history of the area with over 200 photographs from 1910 through the early 1930’s taken by Grand Island photographer Julius Leschinsky.

Setting up a photography studio in Grand Island before the turn of the century, Leschinsky captured an amazing variety of life during his extraordinary career. From bustling commerce to quiet, intimate portraits, from family and social activities to pictures of livestock, from documenting a growing community to the silly and arcane, Leschinsky’s unique eye captured early Grand Island and Hall County in a particular way.

Over 200 images out of 28,000 made the final cut of the book, which will be available for sale at Stuhr Museum’s Prairie Treasures Gift Shop, Hastings Books & Music, Ace Hardware, and other local stores. The book retails for $21.99.

The museum is honored to have the hard work of our research staff honored through this award. The museum takes seriously its duty to preserve Hall County history, and share that history with the public.
