GAR Monument In Railroad Town

GRAND ISLAND, STUHR MUSEUM - After nearly a decade of planning, fundraising and hard work, a monument honoring soldiers who have served in America's wars now rests just off the bandstand in Railroad Town at Stuhr Museum.
The monument has been a long-term project of Railroad Town and area Civil War interpreters and was taken up by the Louisa Ball Post No. 1 of the National Women's Relief Corps when they officially formed last year. The monument itself was designed to look like many similar monuments erected around the country in the late 19th and early 20th century to honor war dead.
The group raised money for this project over many years and in a number of different ways, including last winter's "Nellie Doll" raffle and through one significant donation. The monument will officially be dedicated during the museum's "Memorial Day Remembrance" scheduled for May of 2010 and in the meantime will be a "point of discussion" in Railroad Town.
